What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy, or the therapeutic application of hypnosis,
is effective for weight-loss, smoking cessation, phobias, anxieties,
stress, motivation, performance, and much more. How does hypnosis
work? Many people think of hypnosis or hypnotism as something quite mysterious.
It is confused with magic, or thought to be an almost unconscious
state of mind produced by the hypnotist perhaps even against the
will of the subject! These ideas could not be further from the
truth. Hypnosis is, in fact, the induction
of a state of mind that is very similar to those that people
naturally drift in and out of in the course of a typical day. For
example, the familiar daydream episodes where a friend needs to
repeat a question to you several times before you "snap out"
of the reverie, or the moments just before drifting off to sleep are
very much like hypnotic states.
The major difference between these states and hypnosis is that
in the therapeutic practice of hypnotism (or hypnotherapy)
it is intentionally induced for the purpose of effecting
positive behavioral or attitudinal change. Hypnosis is not only
not a state of unconsciousness, it is a state of highly focused
consciousness. Through the use of suggestion and the cooperation
between the
hypnotist
or hypnotherapist and client, the subject first enters into
a state of profound physical relaxation and then into a relaxation
of the mind that is at the same time highly focused. This
combination of physical relaxation and relaxed mental focus
creates a state of optimum suggestibility which makes the
therapeutic usefulness of hypnosis possible. The uses of
hypnotherapy include weight-loss and weight
management, smoking cessation,
improved motivation and self-esteem,
improved creativity through the unblocking of creative potential,
stress reduction and stress management, control of
anxieties and phobias such as public
speaking, stage fright, test anxiety and any type of anxiety or phobia including anxieties
which cause insomnia or interfere with sleep, memory enhancement,
enhanced sports performance and performance
enhancement of all kinds. Hypnotherapy can, for example, help optimize performance
and control anxieties relating to one's job, testing as well as preparation for tests
and exams. Performance anxiety is in general helped by hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can also help
to alleviate fears and anxieties concerning surgical, dental, and medical examinations
or procedures, including childbirth. Help in controling addictions is another
useful application of hypnosis. And
there are many other applications as well. Regardless of the application, hypnotherapy
is a poweful tool to help a person achieve his or her personal best. In a word, hypnosis can unleash a
person's positive potential when, as is often the case, it has
been held back by self-limiting fears, restrictions and negative habit
formations.
Each of us has a lifetime of memories and habits that we are not
conscious of. Life would be impossible if we had to constantly
relearn all our habits. Imagine having to relearn the habits of
safe driving each time we get into a car, or even the habits of
walking, speaking, etc. Nature has protected us from unlearning
the vast knowledge retained by the subconscious through what has
been called the "critical faculty" or "critical
editor". Old habits and behaviors are not easily changed. The
problem is, of course, that not all habits are good. Along with
habits of good driving and good speech, or good dispositions such
as calmness in moments of difficulty or crisis, there are the
reverse bad habits and dispositions. Then there are the habits of
overeating, poor eating, and smoking. And cigarette and tobacco
smokers who make the wise choice to quit smoking have habits based
on both behavioral (or pyschological) as well as physical (or chemical) factors.
There are irrational fears
of crowds or speaking before groups to name only two. There are
the array of anxieties in response to different types of stressful
situations such as those relating to your business or job, nervousness
about taking tests or examinations of all sorts. We may tell ourselves
over and over again to relax, that our fears are irrational, that we should
quit smoking or stop eating so much, etc. and yet to our dismay and
discouragement our minds just don't want to listen and, alas, we remain a smoker and/or
overeater. Our critical faculty is standing in the way. Our critical
faculty is protecting the status quo: the state of affairs in our
subconscious mind that maintains the constancy of our daily lives. In order
to best realize our highest potential we need to move beyond the status quo
and hypnotherapy can help us do that.
Hypnosis works by bypassing the critical faculty. The key to
success in hypnotherapy is the genuine desire for change. For
hypnotherapy to be successful, a client must consciously want to
change. Ultimately, the conscious mind rules. Positive changes
through hypnotherapy result from the harmonious cooperation
between the conscious and subconscous minds, and consequently they
can seem natural and easy. For example, losing
weight through hypnotherapy is very different than
conventional dieting. A diet is like a never ending battle between
the conscious and subconscious where calorie counting is a
continuous confrontation with the temptations of food. Weight
control through hypnotherapy could not be more unlike dieting
because subconscious cravings are modified and aligned with the
positive choices of the conscious mind. To make a bold metaphor,
dieting is akin to war, whereas weight control through hypnosis is
the waging of peace between the conscious and subconscious minds.
The positive change from negative eating habits to healthful and
sensible patterns of eating in order to lose weight and maintain
weight loss, when done through a program of hypnotherapy, is a
wonderfully natural experience compared with the experiences of
most dieters. Much the same comparison may be made between
conventional stop smoking programs and
hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis and Holistic Health
The
subconscious mind is more than just the repository of habit and
memory. There is little doubt that it also has great control over
what happens in the physical body although the specifics, of course,
are an area of controversy among specialists in both conventional
and alternative health care. There is no question, however, that it
is possible for the mind to control pain and that a positive mental attitude is a
good thing when it comes to the prevention of illness, its positive effect on treatment,
and the enhancement of general health and wellness.
I approach hypnotherapy holistically
as a complementary and alternative means of dealing with pain and the
promotion of greater health and well-being. The mind-body connection is central to any
holistic modality, and so too is the view that there may be more
than one way to deal with physical problems and that this
multi-faceted and integrated approach can be quite effective.
I will work in conjunction with health care practitioners in order to
provide hypnotherapy that complements and supports ongoing treatments and a
lifestyle conducive to enhanced physical wellness.
Hypnosis and Philosophy
There
is a natural relationship between hypnosis
and philosophy. Philosophy is concerned with the conscious
mind and with conscious attitudes and beliefs. What happens when
inadequately analyzed beliefs conflict with a positive decision to
modify habits or behaviors?
Hypnotherapy can bring the conscious and subconscious minds into
harmonious balance. However, the subconscious will reject hypnotic
suggestions that conflict with a person's values and beliefs, and
when these beliefs are in a state of general disharmony indirect
and subtle conflicts can interfere with hypnotherapy. As a
philosophical practitioner and certified hypnotherapist,
I offer sessions in practical philosophy or philosophical counseling either separately
or synergistically combined with hypnotherapy. Philosophical
disciplines ranging from Taoism to existentialism to pragmatism
are used with the goal of achieving clarity and harmony of mind.
Philosophical counseling is also complementary for clients interested
in exploring past life regression. Regardless of whether
the client believes that "past lives" remembered under hypnosis
are real memories or are only imaginary, the real significance
of the issues and patterns that are uncovered for life in the here and now
is undeniable. The utilization of philosophical counseling to clarify and
understand the broader implications of these issues enhances the significance
of this work.
The practice of hypnosis or hypnotism intrinsically recognizes the extraordinary power of
mind. Accordingly, the belief that positive change is possible and that each
individual has within his or her power the potential to realize it is
essential for maximum effectiveness.
Group Meetings and Sessions
Group hypnotherapy sessions are a great way
to experience hypnosis for the first time, and can also supplement the work of ongoing
private hypnotherapy sessions. In addition to group sessions open to the public, I conduct
corporate group hypnotherapy sessions for corporations, non-profits and other groups.
Please call for more details. Philosophy discussion groups also meet regularly and can complement
private sessions in practical philosophy and philosophical counseling, or can simply be a stimulating
and entertaining opportnity to exchange ideas. Both group sessions and discussion groups are designed
to be a fun learning experience.
